One of the most popular plastics used in 3D printing today, PLA filament is a biodegradable thermoplastic that is suitable for a wide range of three dimensional printing applications. Made from renewable resources such as corn, wheat and potato starch, this innovative 3D printing material is kinder on the environment than petroleum based filaments, and as it is one of the easiest plastics to work with, it is ideal for those just starting out with their first 3D printer.
Due to its low toxicity and eco-friendliness, PLA is widely recommended as the default filament for high quality desktop 3D printers such as Lulzbot, Mendel and Printrbot. Virtually odourless when heated, it does not emit strong fumes like ABS filament, but rather a slightly sweet smell, so no fume hood is required and you can print safely in-house, without a heated bed.
PLA filament has a long list of positive features including strength, durability, and a lower extruder temperature threshold of 170-200°C. Once extruded, PLA can be sanded, glued, and painted with acrylic paints, so it remains the number #1 choice for designers, engineers, and architects who print more complex 3D structures where a smoother, shinier, more polished appearance is required.
As an organic material, PLA filament takes longer to cool than the ABS alternatives, and so you may find a fan useful in speeding up the cooling process. However, once cooled, this three dimensional printing plastic is completely rigid and less prone to warping than many of the alternatives. Available in 30 different colours, 1.75mm and 3.00mm options, and a variety of different lengths, this PLA filament is a great investment for all modern 3D printers.
